The word "smart" gets stuck on everything these days. On a wallbox it means concrete things that save money: your fuse does not trip, you use the sun from your roof and you know what the car costs. We explain each function and say when you do not need it.
What makes a wallbox smart
A basic wallbox is in principle a safe socket that talks to the car: it releases current, watches the RCD and locks the connector. A smart wallbox additionally meters, communicates and decides. It knows how much energy you draw, how much is left on the main fuse, how much the photovoltaics produce and when electricity is cheapest. It changes the charging power in real time accordingly and shows everything in an app.

Load management: the function that saves the most money
Most family houses have a 3× 25 A main fuse, about 17 kW. An 11 kW wallbox takes 16 A per phase of that. When the oven, induction hob and water heater switch on in the evening, the fuse trips. The solution without a smart wallbox: upgrade the fuse to 3× 32 A, which means an application to the distributor, a higher monthly fee and sometimes a connection upgrade costing thousands of euros.
A smart wallbox solves it differently. A meter at the main supply reports the house's current consumption and the station charges only with the remaining capacity. While you cook, the car gets 4 kW; at night the full 11 kW. The battery is just as full in the morning and the connection stays as it is. The same principle works for several stations in an apartment building or company, where the total power is shared between cars by priority.

The EUR 280 difference comes back through the subsidy, a saved connection upgrade or the first year of solar charging. For a house with photovoltaics or a standard 3× 25 A fuse the smart version is the clear choice. BASIC makes sense where the connection is strong, there is no PV and one car charges without any need for metering.
When you do not need a smart wallbox
- You have a 3× 32 A main fuse or more and charge one car.
- You have no photovoltaics and do not plan any.
- You do not need the car's consumption separately (not a company car).
- You charge on a single tariff and do not want to change it.
Even then consider that e:car WALL wallboxes can be upgraded later and that the app shows what the car really costs.
Static versus dynamic load management
Manufacturers use "load management" in two senses. Static means the installer sets a fixed limit, say 7 kW, so the wallbox fits alongside the household even at peak. The car then charges more slowly all night, even while the house sleeps. Dynamic management measures actual consumption and changes the limit every few seconds: 3 kW at peak, 11 kW at night. The difference in charging time is twofold and only dynamic management meets the Czech subsidy conditions. When choosing, ask whether the station reads data from a meter at the main supply or merely has an adjustable limit.
A day with a smart wallbox
- 7:30 Leaving for work with a full battery. Overnight the station charged on the low tariff; the app shows 34 kWh for EUR 5.6.
- 13:00 The household's second car sits in the garage, the PV produces 6 kW. Eco mode sends the surplus into the battery; the house draws nothing from the grid.
- 18:00 Return, plug in. Cooking, the oven and dishwasher run. The station watches the main fuse and charges at only 3 kW; the fuse holds.
- 22:00 The low tariff starts; the station raises power to 11 kW and finishes by morning.
- Monthly the app shows what the car cost, how much energy came from the sun and how much from the grid. A company car is billed with one export.
Integration with home automation
e:car WALL SMART wallboxes communicate via Modbus TCP, so they can be integrated into Home Assistant, Loxone or another system that supports the protocol. Typical scenarios: charge only when the spot price is below a set threshold, prioritise the heat pump over the car in frost, or allow guest charging only at certain hours. The control logic runs in your home; the station works without the cloud. The IONT.info app remains for overview and remote start.
Security and privacy of a smart station
A smart wallbox communicates over Wi-Fi or LAN with the IONT.info cloud, which runs in the EU. Charging states, consumption and settings are transmitted, not data from the car. The station works without an internet connection, only without remote management. For company deployments a separate network and a LAN module can be used; updates are verified by the manufacturer's signature.
